As the bandwidth boom continues unabated, so does the importance of optical fiber in telecommunications networks. Fiber is replacing or augmenting copper in data centers, local area networks, campus networks and access networks, while it continues to overtake communication satellites in global communication networks. In wireless broadband– first mile network solutions, fiber is becoming the medium of choice for T1/ E1 and carrier Ethernet links. The effective use of fiber will be discussed from two perspectives. One will review the latest developments in fiber optic cabling and installation techniques for upgrading network links, and the second is how to leverage the capacity of existing fiber infrastructure with multiplexing technology.
